- The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment Programme is the most cost effective national youth development programme in the country. It reaches over 16,000 young people from schools, community youth groups, residential youth facilities and correctional centres on a national budget of less than R7million!
- Its sustainability has been tested in that it celebrates over 30 years of inspiring significance in over 160,000 young people nationally. There are impactful stories of the transformative impact of the Award Programme on a diversity of young people over this time.

You are called “The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment”. Are you part of the Presidency?
No. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Foundation operates the Award Programme in over 140 countries around the world and in many of those countries the Head of State is the Patron-in-Chief of the Award. This is the case in South Africa, where President Jacob Zuma is the Patron-in-Chief, having taken over from President Nelson Mandela in August 2010. The President’s signature, along with that of the Founder of the Award Programme, HRH Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh, appears on the certificates.
In other countries it is called The Head of State Award (Ghana) , The Duke of Edinburgh’s Hilary Award (New Zealand) and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award – Australia.
