OUR VISION

Our vision is to become the self-development programme of choice for young

people in South Africa.

OUR MISSION

Our mission, with the assistance of adult volunteer leaders, is to empower young

people between the ages of 14 and 25, by providing a balanced, non-competitive

framework for self-development that will increase their self-esteem and enhance

their capacity to achieve in whatever context they find themselves: enabling them

to become responsible active citizens within their communities.

ABOUT US

Young people across South Africa feel incapable of affecting real change in their communities due to their lack of confidence, opportunity or education. As a core national resource, the youth of South Africa needs to be nurtured. However, not all talents, skills and abilities of youth can be nurtured in a classroom. Some of the biggest lessons in life are learnt in situations outside of a traditional classroom.

The President’s Award for Youth Empowerment (TPA), affiliated with The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, delivers a global framework for non-formal education and learning. We oversee the implementation of the International Award Framework in over 500 partnering organisations (known as Award Centres), including resourced and under-resourced schools, institutions of higher education, community-based groups, residential youth care facilities, faith-based organisations and correctional centres.

Guided by over 300 Award Leaders and other adult volunteers, the Award can be found across all 9 provinces in all spheres of society. At any given time, there are more than 55 000 participating youth, between the ages of 14 and 24, working towards their Bronze, Silver and Gold levels.

ABOUT US

Since 1983, we have motivated youth to find their purpose, passion and place in the world. We encourage them to dream big, set goals, challenge themselves, become confident, celebrate their achievements and make a difference in their world.

The Award Framework is the most inclusive and holistic youth development programme in South Africa, offering a supportive and non-competitive platform. Although, operated in more than 130 countries and territories, the framework always remains the same wherever delivered. However, no two Awards are the same.

Participants are encouraged to examine themselves, their interests, abilities, and ambitions; then set challenges in the different sections of the Award. Each participant designs and creates their own, unique programme that encourages them to go beyond their comfort zones and take control of their choices, life and future.

By completing the Award, over time, participants develop a sense of commitment. They develop transferable skills, increase their fitness levels, cultivate a sense of adventure and volunteer in their communities. These skills and tools assist them to discover that they are more capable and powerful than they ever dreamt; allow them to improve themselves and their communities.
